Out with the Irons, Kittens are In

This week Hasbro announced the winner of its first fan-voted token contest. The iron is out and is being replaced by a cat in the classic version of the game.

Previous Monopoly tokens have included a lantern, purse, and rocking horse that were swapped out in the 1950s. There was also a cannon and a man on a horse which now only appear in the deluxe version of the game.

The game in its current form is attributed to creator Charles Darrow, who modeled the board after streets in Atlantic City. His niece suggested using charms off of her charm bracelet for the tokens. The game has remained unchanged in its rules, and the iron was one of the original tokens that has been in Monopoly sets since it was patented in 1935.

So long iron. Hello kitty!

What do you think of the new Monopoly token? Will you be sad to see the iron go?
