DIY Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Belt

Like many, I fell in love with Michelle Obama’s silk tie-print coat and the glitzy J.Crew belt she wore with it. The sash, from the Weddings and Parties collection, is long out of stock. The similar sashes currently in stock aren’t quite right, and come with a several-hundred-dollar price tag. I thought I would take a stab at making my own.

I grabbed a one inch grosgrain ribbon in black, plus a selection of beads in different sizes. I decided to go with a black and silver mix to keep it low key and glittery. I spent about $20 on supplies, the price tag all depends on what type of pieces you use and how many.

Once I was ready to get started, I used a piece of tape to lay out my pattern. I kept fiddling with it until I was happy with the result. I tried to get  a mix of geometric shapes like the best on FLOTUS.jen darling by j.k.h. nelson

To get the right length of ribbon, I measured around my waist and added 4-5 inches on each end. That way when I’m finished I can add on a snap button to close it at the right point.

Getting the triangles of small beads lined up correctly and symmetrically was probably the hardest part. The ribbon I picked up at the crafts store wasn’t the strongest, so I would probably try to add some type of backing to make sure everything lays smoothly once I’m finished. jen darling by j.k.h. nelsonWhat do you think of the end result? I’m still thinking if I want to add more to go all the way around like FLOTUS, but perhaps that much beadwork would mean my belt would never be finished!

What celebrity pieces have you tried  to DIY?
