On my whirlwind trip to DC yesterday, I managed to fit in breakfast with my dad, a relaxing lunch in Georgetown, swinging by my friend’s new apartment in Columbia Heights, and catching up with my big sis Alana. For lunch, Nikki and I talked about going to Barrack’s Row in Southeast, but ended up in Georgetown in case we needed some retail therapy.
We started up towards M street and stopped at the first cafe we found, Il Canale.
A friend recommended we try Ristorante Piccolo, but on the map it looked like it was a bit of a hike, so we settled in at a sidewalk table at Il Canale. Once the Verizon truck parked in front of us pulled out, we realized Piccolo was just across the street!
Nik ordered the Ciliegina salad with the biggest olives either of us has seen in a while. I had a Chicken Caesar salad with delicious fresh Parmesan piled on top. Il Canale has a great menu of cocktails made with Prosecco, so we ordered Kir Royals, which is my favorite. A Kir Royal can be made with either Champagne or Prosecco mixed with Chambord. Sweet, bubbly goodness in a glass.
We stopped by Pleasant Pops on our way to Columbia Heights and picked up a handful of popscicles. The Cookies and Cream, Strawberry Ginger Lemonade and Vegan Mexican Chocolate were good, though the Strawberry Basil Cream tasted too much like milk for my lactose intolerant taste buds. If you’re looking for something quick and a little different, Pleasant Pops is worth a try.
I’m so glad I got to spend some quality time with some of my favorite people, despite our coming together under unfortunate circumstances. And it always feels great to be home, to see the Capital and the Washington Monument, to drive over the Potomac and feel the familiarity of of the District. Can’t wait to go back for a long weekend this summer!
