The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my favorite things about Virginia. It is such a beautiful drive, and definitely made an impact on my growing up. We would take class trips to Lurray Caverns and to Charlottesville and take pieces of this historic road. Then at prep school we would go to visit the boys schools that lay hidden behind the folds of the mountains. And in between trying to put on mascara and perfume on a bounding bus we would take in the sights.
The Parkway is the most popular scenic drive in the nation – and it should be. Designed by both engineers and landscape artists, the Parkway spans the Blue Ridge Mountain Range through North Carolina and Virginia. This month it’s 78 years old.
I mean come on, it’s almost stupidly pretty, even if the speed limit is a ridiculous 35 mph. So if you’re going through my home state or down to Carolina this fall, think about taking a detour along the way. It’s worth the drive!
