On Saturday we are leaving for our first vacation this year. I know. I’m about to go crazy with cabin fever. We’re heading up to the Ausable Club in Keene Valley, NY. My dear friend Nikki has a family camp there (really like a wooden palace in the woods… you’ll see) and we’re going to spend a few days enjoying nature and no cell phone reception. Woo hoo!

The Ausable Club is a nature conservancy and reserve formed in 1887. Residents of the blissful Adirondacks were concerned over planned development of the area, and purchased thousands of acres to stop the impending doom of nature. Eventually, this turned into the club it is today. All the land is owned by the Reserve or “maintain[ed] in perpetuity the ‘forever wild’ nature” of the land by the state of New York, and the members have 100+ year leases on their summer homes.
Enter the camp. I mean seriously, why isn’t she spending all summer here? Oh right, because she has a real life as a horse trainer. I borrowed some of her photos to get a better feel for where we’ll be going.
This is the summer dining room, which I am pumped to say we’ll be using. It looks just darling.
The back deck looks fantastic also. Plus is has this cozy hammock:
I have a small stack of books I’m bringing with me, just in case everyone decides to go on a 9-hour hike up the mountains and I can’t join – silly hip problems. So if I’m missing, just look for me there.
We’ll also be spending some much-needed time outside. You can only get to the camp by boat (not sure what that means… We’ll find out!) and the area is just stunning.
I may not be able to climb those mountains, but I’ll be out on the water every second. Daphne will only be with us for part of our trip, so hopefully I can sneak her into a kayak for an afternoon so she can enjoy being out on the water too.
We are thrilled to finally be getting away and getting a well-earned break from our house – and our projects!
Have you been to the Adirondacks? Are they on your list of ‘places to visit’?
