[TALENT] Elon University sent the fifth student trip down to the Gulf region over spring break to help with Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
The volunteers worked with Our Lady of the Gulf Church in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, moving trees, rubble, and personal items found across the community. The group stayed in a tent city called iCare Village set up by the non-profit organization the Morrell Foundation providing lodging, food, and bathrooms to volunteers.
Professor Jessica Gisclair was one of four faculty and staff who accompanied 28 students on the trip. Gisclair also said that the region simply does not have enough hands to repair the community on its own.
Gisclair said she was motivated by the students on the trip.
VOSOT: “The students were invincible. I thanked them before we went on the trip and I thanked them again at the end for showing such a respect to the community and giving such an effort.”
The Kernodle Center for Service Learning facilitated all five Elon trips and several future trips are being planned for this summer and next fall.
